The only report received was from a single trap at Portland Obs: singles of Feathered Ranunculus and Epiphyas postvittana.

11 - 28 November 2005

Very few reports received due to the wet then cold weather, with the exception of a daytime record of a Hummingbird Hawk-moth at Fortuneswell, Portland on 15th (per M Cade), and a Silver Y during the day on 23rd at Portland (both per M Cade).

10 November 2005

A Cosmopolitan amongst 20 species at Durlston Country Park (M Parsons and K Thomas).  A single Rusty-dot Pearl was seen on the Portland Obs lounge windows after dark (M Cade).

9 November 2005

A late Light Brown Apple Moth, at rest on the ceiling in offices, Hurn (T A Box).  The first moth-trapping this month in the Portland Obs garden produced a Silver Y, a handful of common residents and a single Brindled Ochre (the latter is resident on the island but rarely recorded at the Obs) (M Cade).

7 November 2005

Another Oak Rustic (R Bell and B Elliot).

6 November 2005

A Silver Y among a small number of resident species, Lyons Gate (T A Box).

5 November 2005

A Cosmopolitan, at Walditch (M Parsons).  Two Oak Rustic at Highcliffe, VC11 (P Davey).  Oak Rustic must surely be established at a number of sites on the mainland, after a flush of records from Hampshire and Dorset over the last few weeks, following their discovery on Jersey in 1991, Guernsey in 1996, and the Isle of Wight in 1999.  As there are some good stands of Holm Oak along much of the Dorset and Hampshire coasts, it seems likely that there is scope for further discoveries of this handsome moth.

2 November 2005

Two Oak Rustic, a Delicate and Scarce Bordered Straw, Durlston Country Park (M Parsons and K Thomas).  Another Oak Rustic, several Flame Brocades and a Red-headed Chestnut reported from the Swanage area, dates to be confirmed (per Migrantmoth website).

30 October 2005

Two Cypress Carpet and a Blair's Mocha, at actinic, St Leonards (S Curson), and a Sprawler at Motcombe (P Butter).  Two White-speck and a Vestal were the pick of the poor selection of immigrants in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps (M Cade).

29 October 2005

27 October 2005

At Durlston there was a Flame Brocade, a Red-headed Chestnut and four Oak Rustic (see 26th) (M Townsend), while virtually the only migrant recorded at Portland, was a single Flame Brocade (M Cade).  Inland, a Red-headed Chestnut was caught at Puddletown (H Wood Homer).  In addition, a Hummingbird Hawk-moth seen by day in a garden at Preston, Weymouth (R Morris). A Vestal at Gillingham (per Dorset BC).

26 October 2005

At Durlston Country Park: were two Oak Rustic (new to Dorset and 2nd & 3rd mainland records), five Scarce Bordered Straw, one Delicate, two White-speck, and a Palpita vitrealis (P Davey, C Manley and S Nash).

The caterpillar of Oak Rustic feeds on Holm Oak, and may possibly become established at Durlston, following its initial discovery on the Isle of Wight.  It is quite a late autumn flyer, being on the wing from October to December, when it is rarely found except at light.

Meanwhile, despite the promising-looking conditions there was little sign of an upturn in immigrant moth numbers overnight at Portland, which produced: five Silver Y, three Rusty-dot Pearla, three Scarce Bordered Straw, two Diamond-back Moth, two Dark Sword-grass and singles of Nomophila noctuella, Pearly Underwing and Delicate.  At Southwell, Portland, a garden trap produced singles of White-speck, Delicate and Scarce Bordered Straw.

22 October 2005

At Portland: 11 Silver Y, ten Nomophila noctuella, nine Diamond-back Moth, seven Rusty-dot Pearl, six Pearly Underwing, five Delicate, three Scarce Bordered Straw, two Dark Sword-grass and a Cosmopolitan (M Cade).

20 October 2005

The Portland Obs garden moth-traps attracted a few routine immigrants overnight: six Silver Y, three Rusty-dot Pearl, three Nomophila noctuella, two Scarce Bordered Straw, one Dark Sword-grass and a Delicate (M Cade).

19 October 2005

Windy conditions spoilt overnight moth-trapping at the Portland Obs, where the only immigrants recorded were four Silver Y and three Scarce Bordered Straw (M Cade).

18 October 18th

Heavy rainfall overnight dropped a decent arrival of new immigrants in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps: 26 Rusty-dot Pearl, 21 Silver Y, nine Diamond-back Moth, five Gem, five Delicate, three Nomophila noctuella, two Dark Sword-grass, and single Palpita vitrealis, Pearly Underwing and White-speck (M Cade).

16 October 2005

At Portland after overnight rain, the only immigrants were five Silver Y, three Diamond-back Moth, two Nomophila noctuella, three Rusty-dot Pearl, three Delicate and singles of Hummingbird Hawk-moth, Cosmopolitan and Scarce Bordered Straw.  A single Old World Webworm at light, Puddletown (H Wood Homer).

15 October 2005

The Portland Obs garden moth-traps again picked up a handful of immigrants: eight Silver Y, seven Diamond-back Moth, five Delicate, two Nomophila noctuella and Rusty-dot Pearl and singles of Pearly Underwing, Cosmopolitan and Scarce Bordered Straw (M Cade). The moth trap at Dulston CP produced a reasonable list of species including: Beautiful Gothic, Feathered Ranunculus, Large Wainscot, Angle Shades, Vines Rustic and Green Brindled Crescent.  Signs of migration with several Rusty-dot Pearl, Silver Y and a Delicate.

14 October 2005

The only moth of note at Portland overnight was a Small Mottled Willow, while at Durlston CP, there were only a dozen species but did include Beautiful Gothic, Dusky Lemon Sallow and Feathered Brindle.  However, there were single specimens of Uresiphita polygonalis at light at Shapwick (P Davey) and at Puddletown (H Wood Homer).

13 October 2005

The best moth of the night was a Tunbridge Wells Gem at light, West Bexington, one of several reported in the west country this week (R Eden).  There was a Vestal (straw yellow with a black stripe), at MV, Lyons Gate (T A Box).  At Portland, a specimen of Merveille du Jour in the Obs garden moth-traps was a first record for the island; other immigrants there included seven Delicate, three Pearly Underwing and singles of Diamond-back Moth, Rusty-dot Pearl, Nomophila noctuella, Bordered Straw and Silver Y (M Cade).

12 October 2005

Five Delicate, three each of Rusty-dot Pearl, Vestal, and Silver Y, two Hummingbird Hawk-moth, and single Diamond-back Moth and Nomophila noctuella at Portland Obs overnight (M Cade).

At Portland Obs: five Rusty-dot Pearl, three Silver Y, three Cosmopolitan, two White-speck, and one each of Hummingbird Hawk-moth, Dusky-lemon Sallow, Small Mottled Willow, and a Scarce Bordered Straw (M Cade).

10 October 2005

At Durlson CP, a late burst of activity at the trap brought in seven Diamond-back Moth, two Crocidosema plebejana, 12 Rush Veneer, 30 Rusty-dot Pearl, one Vestal, five Convolvulus Hawk-moth, two Dark Sword-grass, a very fresh Langmaid's Yellow Underwing, 20 Pearly Underwing, 40+ Delicate, a Pale-lemon Sallow - 2nd Dorset record, two Dusky-lemon Sallow, a Scarce Bordered Straw, and 80+ Silver Y.

This influx was not reflected at Portland, which managed seven Rusty-dot Pearl, five Delicate, two Silver Y and a Cosmopolitan (M Cade).  Meanwhile, inland at Lyons Gate, a Satellite and a Tawny Pinion were the only moths of note (T A Box).

9 October 2005

At Portland, disappointingly after what appeared to be an influx of butterflies during the day, the only migrant moths from eight traps were two each of Diamond-back Moth, Rusty-dot Pearl and Delicate, and a White-speck (M Cade).

7 October 2005

A male Four-spotted Footman and a Dark Sword-grass, inland at Lyons Gate (T A Box).  Meanwhile, at Portland, four Rusty-dot Pearl, a Silver Y and a Delicate were the only immigrants trapped overnight (M Cade).

The occasional attempts at moth-trapping at the Obs lately have been a dead loss although after dark Mottled Grey are beginning to appear in small numbers amongst the more plentiful Winter Moths that are often attracted to the lit windows of the Obs lounge (M Cade).

With the conditions looking faintly promising for an arrival of immigrant lepidoptera the Obs garden moth-traps were operated last night; immigrants were entirely absent and the pick of the few resident species on the wing was a single Satellite. Last night also saw the emergence of the first Porter's Rustic reared through from eggs obtained from the two specimens of this species caught at the Obs last August (only the larvae kept in a warm room have pupated; many others kept in cooler conditions have spun cocoons but remain in diapause and have not yet pupated) (M Cade).
