The sightings are listed roughly from south to north in the county, invariably Portland / Weymouth area is first, followed by Durlston.  The dates below are when overnight traps were set, rather than checked, while daytime records are on the date seen.  Please send all records in tabular form to the relevant County Recorders before the end of the year, and note that these records are subject to verification by the County Recorders and inclusion on this site should not be regarded as acceptance.

At Portland, there was an immigrant Rusty-dot Pearl, while Light-brown Apple Moth and Angle Shades were the only other species trapped (M Cade).  At Broadwey, a December Moth and a Rusty-dot Pearl (P Harris), and nearby at Preston, a December Moth (R Lambert).

Another reasonable selection at Portland: 14 Rusty-dot Pearl, five White-speck, two Silver Y, a Dark Sword-grass and a Delicate; in addition, Double-striped Pug, Brick and Feathered Ranunculus were residents still flying (M Cade).  At Kingston, a late Eudonia angustea along with Chestnut, four December Moth and a Feathered Thorn (P Benham). At Motcombe, singles each of Winter Moth, December Moth, Mottled Umber, Brick and Light-brown Apple-tree Moth (P Butter).

The first attempt at trapping at Portland for a few nights proved productive for the time of year: 12 Rusty-dot Pearl, six White-speck, four Silver Y, and singles each of Pearly Underwing, and Delicate were immigrants, while Feathered Thorn, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Black Rustic and Angle Shades were residents still flying (M Cade).  At Broadwey a Delicate, two Feathered Thorn, three December Moth and a November Moth (P Harris).  A Rusty-dot Pearl at Kingston (P Benham).

By day, a Herald hibernating in the Gents toilet at Arne RSPB (J Wilson).  Overnight, the first December Moth of the winter at Broadwey (P Harris).  At Motcombe, the first December Moth of the year there, and a Chestnut, Grey Shoulder-knot and two Feathered Thorn (P Butter).

At Portland, an unexpected haul of immigrants: four Rusty-dot Pearl, five Delicate, two Pearly Underwing, two White-speck, and a Dark Sword-grass; a single November Moth was only the third island record (M Cade).  A very unseasonal Common Quaker at Broadwey (P Harris).  Another quiet night with just five species at Burton, near Christchurch: six Eperrita sp, singles of Common Marbled Carpet, Red-green Carpet, Yellow-line Quaker and Dark Chestnut, the latter two new for the site (J Southworth).

Immigrant moths at Portland overnight: 24 Rusty-dot Pearl, three Delicate, three White-speck, and two Silver Y; singles of Heart and Dart and White-point were noteworthy for the time of year (M Cade).  Five Oak Rustic before 18:00 in the evening at Highcliffe Castle (P Davey and R Cook).  A further two Oak Rustic at Durlston Village, and a Large Wainscot (P England).

Immigrant moths at Portland overnight: 16 Rusty-dot Pearl, ten Delicate, four Pearly Underwing, and singles of White-speck, Merveille du Jour and Silver Y (M Cade).  A White-point at Broadwey (P Harris).  Two Oak Rustic to MV at Durlston (J Scanes and R Cook).  At Burton, near Christchurch, only three species: six Eperrita sp, a Rusty-dot Pearl, and a Green Brindled Crescent, which was new for the garden (J Southworth).

Immigrant moths at Portland consisted of 41 Rusty-dot Pearl, four Delicate, three White-speck, two Silver Y, and a Pearly Underwing (M Cade).  At Durlston, the highlights were Rusty-dot Pearl, Delicate, Oak Rustic and Silver Y (L Hill).

At Portland, a fair haul in mild conditions: 53 Rusty-dot Pearl, six Delicate, seven Silver Y, six Pearly Underwing, three White-speck, and single Gem, Scarce Bordered Straw and Red Admiral (M Cade).  There was a Crocidosema plebejana a first for the garden, along with Delicate, Merveille du Jour, Green-brindled Crescent and two Red-green Carpet at Broadwey (P Harris), and Clancy's Rustic, Barred Sallow and Dark Chestnut at Preston (R Lambert).  Opposite Poole park, a Silver Y and the first Red-green Carpet of the year there (V Giavarini).  At Burton, near Christchurch, 12 species including nine Eperitta sp, three Blair's Shoulder-knot, a Lunar Underwing, five Cypress Carpet, a Feathered Ranunculus and an Oak Nycteoline (J Southworth).  At Kingston, Agapeta hamana was a late surprise, while Diurnea lipsiella was new for the garden (P Benham).

 

30 October 2007
Milder weather at Portland saw 56 Rusty-dot Pearl, four Delicate, three Silver Y, two Rush Veneer, and single Gem, Spruce Carpet and White-speck, with yesterdays Flame Brocade recaptured (M Cade).  At Broadwey, Merveille du Jour, Delicate and November Moth (P Harris).  Three Brindled Crescent trapped in the garden at Gillingham, and a Cypress Carpet at the bathroom window, was new for the site (G Hopkins).

The third record of the migrant Flame Brocade in the Weymouth area in four days, with one at Portland, along with five Rusty-dot Pearl and four White-speck (M Cade).

A few immigrants at Portland, 12 Rusty-dot Pearl, four Delicate, four Silver Y and three White-speck (M Cade).  At Broadwey, just a Delicate was of note (P Harris), and at Preston a White-speck (R Lambert).

At Portland, seven Rusty-dot Pearl, and singles of Silver Y, Delicate, and White-speck (M Cade).  Another Flame Brocade was captured, this time at Broadwey, also Dark Chestnut (P Harris).  At Durlston, the highlight was a single Oak Rustic of the form albomacula, and migrants included a Diamond-back Moth, two Rusty-dot Pearl, a White-speck, three Delicate, and two Silver Y; in addition, two Beautiful Gothic, a late example of Square-spot Rustic and an unseasonal Pseudargyrotoza conwagana (M Deans, Paul Bryant and Lee Gregory of Suffolk Moth Group).

 

26 October 2007
An increase in migrant activity evident at Portland and Weymouth area, with 44 Rusty-dot Pearl, six Silver Y, two Pearly Underwing, and singles each of Diamond-back Moth, Rush Veneer, Gem, Spruce Carpet and Delicate, and a late Swallow-tailed Moth at Portland (M Cade).  A Flame Brocade was the pick at Preston, near Weymouth, also Clancy's Rustic, Delicate and Red-green Carpet (R Lambert).  Recorded as 13 degrees at Broadwey, and a reasonable selection of moths: Dark Sword-grass, two Merveille du Jour, two Epirrita sp, Red-green Carpet, Yellow-line Quaker, Red-line Quaker, Green-brindled Crescent and another Straw Dot (P Harris).  At Burton, Christchurch, two Merveille du Jour (J Southworth).


25 October 2007
At Portland, 15 Rusty-dot Pearl, and singles each of Silver Y, Delicate and Rush Veneer (M Cade). Four Eprirrita sp, were the first for the autumn at Broadwey, and a Cypress Carpet (P Harris).

Slightly milder conditions overnight, brought nine Rusty-dot Pearl, seven Silver Y, three Delicate and two Pearly Underwing to Portland (M Cade).  At Chickerell, two Cypress Carpet were the best of the catch, while a Feathered Thorn was the first in the garden for two years (C Pinder).  A late Straw Dot was the minor highlight at Broadwey (P Harris).  A Clancy's Rustic at Preston (R Lambert).

Chilly and windy overnight, and the only immigrants caught at Portland were two Rusty-dot Pearl and a White-speck (M Cade).

Odds and ends at Portland, with 23 Rusty-dot Pearl, three Pearly Underwing, a White-speck and a Silver Y, along with the first Brick of the autumn there (M Cade).  At Chickerell, singles of Silver Y, Green-brindled Crescent and the first Epirrita sp of the year (C Pinder).  An hour and a half with a light over a sheet, produced two new moths for the garden at Verwood: Cypress Carpet and Blair's Shoulder-knot (C Court).  At Kingston, usual late autumn fare, including Merveille du Jour, Sallow, Barred Sallow and Red-green Carpet, but two potential immigrants in the form of very darkly marked, and late, Straw Dot and an out of season Shoulder-striped Wainscot (P Benham).

At Portland the traps held 48 Rusty-dot Pearl, two each of Rush Veneer and Dark Sword-grass, and singles of Diamond-back Moth, Pearly Underwing and Silver Y; in addition Yellow-line Quaker was new for the year there (M Cade).  At Chickerell, 11 species, including singles of Rusty-dot Pearl, Silver Y, Large Wainscot and Feathered Ranunculus (C Pinder).

The Portland traps held five Rusty-dot Pearl, and singles of Diamond-back Moth, Gem, Pearly Underwing and White-speck (M Cade)  At Broadwey, a male Four-spotted Footman, two Merveille du Jour and a Green-brindled Crescent (P Harris).  An Oak Rustic in a garden trap at Durlston village (P England).

The drop in temperature all but finished off recent moth activity.  At Portland, numbers reduced to three each of Dark Sword-grass and Pearly Underwing, two of Rusty-dot Pearl and Delicate, and singles of Rush Veneer and Silver Y (M Cade).  At Gillingham, with ice on the trap, the first Merveille du Jour and Epirrita sp. of the year there (G Hopkins).

There was a first for Portland, a Slender Burnished Brass; the only other migrants six Rusty-dot Pearl, four Delicate, three Rush Veneer, two Pearly Underwing and a Gem (M Cade).  At Gillingham, of five moths caught, there were singles each of Delicate and Green-brindled Crescent var, capucina (G Hopkins).

 

16 October 2007
Despite the weather, still some immigrants at Portland: 29 Rusty-dot Pearl, three Rush Veneer, two each of Delicate and Silver Y, and a Gem (M Cade).  At Broadwey, a male Four-spotted Footman, Yellow-line Quaker and a Rush Veneer; the last species is rarer this year here than Clancy's Rustic! (P Harris).

At Portland, in windy conditions, 21 Rusty-dot Pearl, four Rush Veneer, two each of Diamond-back Moth and Delicate, and a Pearly Underwing (M Cade).  Nearby at Broadwey, a Clancy's Rustic and a Sallow (P Harris).

A reasonable haul of migrants / wanderers at Portland: 81 Rusty-dot Pearl, eight Delicate, six Diamond-back Moth, four each of Rush Veneer and Silver Y, three Dark Sword-grass, and singles of Pearly Underwing, Brindled Green and Merveille du Jour (M Cade). A very late Buff Ermine at Chickerell (C Pinder).  Clancy’s Rustic, Merveille du Jour and Cypress Carpet at Broadwey (P Harris). A Gem at Preston (R Lambert).  A male Blair's Wainscot at Ringstead Bay, a migrant or wanderer from local colony? (R Bell).  About 48 species at Durlston, the highlights being Flame Brocade, Four-spotted Footman, Hummingbird Hawkmoth, Oak Rustic, c.50 Delicate and a Cypress Carpet (R Cook, A Page and P Davey). Micros at Merley, WImborne included Ypsolopha parenthesella and Acleris emargana, and best of 18 species of macro were a Four-spotted Footman and four Merveille du Jour (D & M Godfrey).  At Shapwick, the first Clancy’s Rustic there, and three Swallow-tailed Moth (P Davey).  A Southern Chestnut was a good find, and a Chinese Character was rather late at Motcombe (P Butter).

At Portland, 33 Rusty-dot Pearl, six Delicate, three each of Diamond-back Moth and Silver Y, singles each of Gem and White-speck (M Cade).  At Southwell, Portland, two Mallow, and singles each of Cypress Carpet and Feathered Brindle, while at Broadwey two Clancy’s Rustic, a Delicate and a Green-brindled Crescent (P Harris).  At Kingston, two Delicate and a Silver Y were the only migrants, but also of note were three Green-brindled Crescent, singles each of Red-line Quaker, and Red-green Carpet all new for the year; two Dusky Thorn and a fresh Small Wainscot were rather late, and a Vapourer was a surprise (P Benham).

A warm cloudy night prompted some reasonable catches with a hint of migration.  At Portland, the first island record of Barred Sallow, and migrants included 34 Rusty-dot Pearl, three each of Delicate and Silver Y, a Spruce Carpet, and a Clancy’s Rustic (M Cade).  At Preston, two Barred Sallow and a Cypress Carpet (R Lambert).  Broadwey weighed in with Clancy’s Rustic, Brindled Green, Pinion-streaked Snout, Large Wainscot, two Cypress Carpet and a Red-line Quaker (P Harris).  At Chickerell, a Delicate, otherwise Red-line Quaker and Blair’s Shoulder-knot were firsts for the year and a Cypress Pug and a very late Gold Triangle were of note (C Pinder).  A Clouded Border at East Lulworth (L Hill).  A large and interesting haul at Tolpuddle, including Large Wainscot, three Lunar Underwing, two Beaded Chestnut, Neglected Rustic, November Moth, Delicate, Red-green Carpet, Blair’s Shoulder-knot, Four-spotted Footman and a Bordered Beauty (J Francis).  At Shapwick, four Delicate, two Rusty-dot Pearl, White-point, Wax Moth, Shuttle-shaped Dart and not for the first time in an October, a Swallow-tailed Moth (P Davey).  Just to prove migrants do get to the far north of the county, there were three Delicate, a Dark Sword-grass and a Silver Y at Motcombe, supported by a wandering Spruce Carpet, and of the other 31 species caught were good numbers of Green-brindled Crescent, Brindled Green, Barred Sallow, Sallow, Blair’s Shoulder-knot, two Satellite and a Brown-spotted Pinion (P Butter).

By day, a Hummingbird Hawkmoth at Winterborne Stickland, while overnight a reasonable catch included two Delicate, and singles each of Red-line Quaker, Straw Dot and Black Rustic (per Dorset B C website).

By day, a Hummingbird Hawkmoth nectaring at Verbana bonariensis, Kingston (P Benham). 

Portland;s immigrants / wanderers were 26 Rusty-dot Pearl, four Silver Y, three Delicate, a Red-green Carpet and an Autumnal Rustic (M Cade).  At Chickerell, the only migrant was a Delicate, while Green-brindled Crescent and Large Wainscot were firsts for the year there (C Pinder). 

 

8 October 2007
Immigrants and wanderers at Portland: 19 Rusty-dot Pearl, five Delicate, two Silver Y and singles each of Deep-brown Dart and Scarce Bordered Straw (M Cade).  Probably only the third county record of Pale-lemon Sallow at Broadwey, and another Clancy's Rustic (P Harris).  At Great Ovens Hill, two Heath Rustic, several Black Rustic and Pine Carpet, and a single Blastobasis declorella; negative results for Southern Chestnut here and on Canford Heath on 6th, both heathland sites south of the River Stour - this relatively new bell heather-feeding species, first discovered in the UK in Sussex in 1990, then subsequently spread rapidly across the New Forest, now occupying heathland blocks to the north of the Stour in Dorset (P Davey).  Five Southern Chestnut were recorded before 19:30 from Verwood, these and a Choreutis parana were both new for the garden (C Court).  A busy night at Shapwick: Plutella xylostella, Dark Sword-grass, two Delicate, four Silver Y, Blair's Shoulder-knot, Brown-spot Pinion, Deep-brown Dart, Sallow, Centre-barred Sallow, Barred Sallow, Orange Sallow and the first Feathered Thorn (P Davey).

A slight improvement at Portland, with immigrants / wanderers: 14 Rusty-dot Pearl, four Delicate, four Silver Y, three Clancy's Rustic, two Pearly Underwing, singles each of Rush Veneer, Spruce Carpet and a Dark Sword-grass; a Mallow as new for the year (M Cade). At Broadwey, highlights were Clancy's Rustic, Merveille du Jour and Pink-barred Sallow (P Harris). Another Clancy's put in an appearance at Preston (R Lambert).  58 moths of 18 species at Burton, Christchurch; the highlights were Dark Sword-grass, Pink-barred Sallow, two Blair's Shoulder-knot and three Beaded Chestnut (J Southworth).  The best at Kingston were two Brindled Green, a somewhat belated appearance, as was a Figure of Eight; Acleris emargana was new for the garden (P Benham).

Immigrants at Portland included nine Rusty-dot Pearl, four Delicate, two Pearly Underwing and a Silver Y; Blair's Shoulder-knot and Large Wainscot were new for the year there (M Cade).  A Rusty-dot Pearl was the only migrant at Chickerell (C Pinder).  A Barred Sallow was the highlight at Broadwey (P Harris).

At Portland Obs, 14 Rusty-dot Pearl, four Delicate, three Silver Y, two Pearly Underwing and a Scarce Bordered Straw (M Cade), while elsewhere on Portland, a Beautiful Gothic (P Harris).  A Clancy's Rustic at Preston, Weymouth (R Lambert).  A Merveille du Jour, and a Pink-barred Sallow were the highlights and new for the site, and a Pale Tussock larva found under an oak tree, at Broadstone (K Clements).  At Verwood: highlights included Neglected Rustic and Four-spotted Footman (C Court).  Unusually, at Motcombe, was a Hebrew Character, which normally flies in the spring (per Dorset B C website).

An increase in records, or at least recording effort.  At Portland, an increase in immigrants: 36 Rusty-dot Pearl, four Delicate, and singles of Diamond-back Moth, Rush Veneer, Dark Sword-grass and Silver Y; while Spruce Carpet and Pink-barred Sallow were both unusual wanderers to the traps (M Cade).  At Chickerell, singles of Rush Veneer and Silver Y, and a late generation Light Emerald  (C Pinder).  Broadwey produced a Delicate and Pink-barred Sallow (P Harris).  A Clancy's Rustic at Dorchester (J Down).  Highlights at Shaggs included singles each of Rusty-dot Pearl, Four-spotted Footman, White-point and Pinion-streaked Snout, and five Delicate (L Hill).  At Burton, Christchurch, an L-album Wainscot, Silver Y and a Red Underwing (J Southworth).  At Shapwick: five Barred Sallow, three Delicate, three Dusky Thorn, two White-point, Canary-shouldered Thorn, Centre-barred Sallow, Dark Sword-grass and a Deep-brown Dart (P Davey).  Interest at Kingston centred on late generation moths, in the form of Engrailed, Light Emerald, Bright-line Brown-eye, and Archips podanus, while the sixth September Thorn of the year was by far the most recorded there (P Benham).

The highlight of the day was a Scar Bank Gem at Portland, about the 15th British record, and a second for the island (M Cade). There was an Angle-striped Sallow and a Portland Ribbon Wave at West Bexington (R Eden per P Harris).  At Broadstone, firsts for the year there were six Lunar Underwing, a Lesser Swallow Prominent, a Triple-spotted Clay, two Maidens Blush and a Small Scallop (K Clements).  At Kingston, a Great Brocade (conf. P Sterling), originally thought to possibly be a late Grey Arches; also new for the site were Pyraustra aurata, Agriphila inquinatella, Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, Ebulea crocealis, Monopsis waeverella; other noteworthy was a freshly hatched Mocha, and migrants included three Silver Y and a Rush Veneer (P Benham).  At Gillingham, pride of place goes to a Great Brocade, the second record there since 1996, supported by Oak Eggar, Elephant Hawkmoth and Lesser Swallow Prominent (G Hopkins).

The overnight thundery rain deposited slightly increased numbers of routine immigrant moths at Portland, with 17 Diamond-back Moth, seven Silver Y, five Rusty-dot Pearl, a Dark Sword-grass and a Delicate; in addition Coronet and Marbled Beauty were new for the year (M Cade).  At Broadwey, minor highlights were Gothic, Bordered Beauty and Rosy Footman; the catches there reckoned to be 10% of the moths normally one would expect based on previous years, an indication of how poor the year has been (P Harris).

Another pitiful selection of immigrants at Portland: three Silver Y and singles of Rusty-dot Pearl and Dark Sword-grass (M Cade).  At Broadwey, a Phycitodes maritima, Oak Hook-tip, Haworth's Pug, male Four-spotted Footman, and a Saltern Ear (P Harris).

At Merley, there was a morning event for the Dorset Wildlife Trust attended by 38 participants, studying the previous nights catch, and a Grass Emerald was a first for the garden there (organised by D & M Godfrey and R & B Steadman).  At Verwood, Orthopygia glaucinalis, Ringed China-mark, Single-dotted Wave, Horse Chestnut, Cloaked Minor and a Bird's Wing (C Court).  At Wyke Farm: many Assara terebrella, in addition to Ancylis laetana, Calamatropha paludella, Lappet, Satin Beauty, Poplar Grey, Lunar-spotted Pinion, Dingy Shell, Cloaked Pug and an aberrant Tawny-barred Angle (P Davey).  At Kingston, year ticks were Black Arches and Lunar-spotted Pinion, while Homeosoma sinuella and Pempilia formosa were of interest among the micros (P Benham).

No migrants at Portland, but Devonshire Wainscot and Square-spot Rustic were new for the year (M Cade).  While putting the trap out, a Leopard moth flew out of the vegetation in the garden at Broadwey, and overnight there was a Crescent, Small Yellow Wave, Oak Nycteoline, Double-lobed, two Scarce Footman and a Dark Sword-grass (P Harris).  At Verwood, among 75 species trapped were Orthopygia glaucinalis, Catoptria pinella, Purple-bordered Gold, Ringed China-Mark, Small Seraphim, Dwarf Cream Wave, Scallop Shell, Four-spotted Footamn, Red-necked Footman, Rosy Footman, Rosy Marbled, Leopard, Festoon and Waved Black (M Weaver).  At Kingston, a first record of Striped Wainscot, and singles of Grass Emerald, Tawny Shears, Common Lutestring and Lappet (P Benham).

A slight upturn in moths reported overnight, although at Portland the only migrants were singles European Corn-borer and Silver Y; Dingy Footman, Broad-barred White and Cloaked Minor were all new for the year (M Cade).  At Chickerell, a Plain Pug was a first for the garden, three Kent Black Arches were of interest, and a Rusty-dot Pearl was the only migrant (C Pinder).  At Broadwey, the highlights were a Synaphe punctalis, two Slender Pug, a Rosy Footman, three Scarce Footman and a Scarce Silver-lines (P Harris).  At Verwood: Synaphe punctalis, Gold Triangle, Drinker, Scalloped Oak, Garden Carpet, Lesser Swallow Prominent, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing (C Court).

A surprise at Portland, when nine fresh Bloxworth Snout were disturbed from crevices with pellitory-on-the-wall; in addition, two Chalk Carpet, two Sitochroa palealis, and singles of Dolicharthria punctalis and Hummingbird Hawkmoth were found (M Parsons).  Cinnabar caterpillars (described as worms in a rugby shirt) on ragwort plants at Durlston, with some adults in flight, and also Small Magpie, Yellow Shell and Six-spot Burnet by day (per Durlston C P website).

A Delicate at Broadwey was the only moth of mention (P Harris).  The best of the catch of 21 macro species at Merley was a Leopard moth, and perhaps four Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing were indicating that perhaps summer is nearly here! (D & M Godfrey).  Unusually, there were six European Corn-borer (four males, two females) at Hurn, in addition to Clouded Brindle, Large Emerald and Brown-tail which were new for the year (M Jeffes).

A Silver Y, only the second of the year, and a Rusty-dot Pearl were of note amongst a stunningly small catch of just 42 moths (Paul's words, not mine!), at Kingston (P Benham).

By day at Lytchett Matravers, Burnet Companion appropriately enough along with Five-spot Burnet and Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet (per Dorset B C website).  The only immigrants at Portland were singles of Rusty-dot Pearl and Delicate; Least yellow Underwing and Common Rustic were both new for the year there (M Cade).  Highlights at Broadwey, included Catoptria pinella, Blue-bordered Carpet, Kent Black Arches, Oak Nycteoline and Dark Spectacle (P Harris).  New for the garden at Verwood: Large Tabby, Common Footman, Scarce Footman, Four-spotted Footman, Cloaked Carpet, Fan-foot, Grass Emerald, Scalloped Shell, Delicate and Yellow-tail (C Court).

A Currant Clearwing at Fortuneswell, Portland, was an addition to the island moth list - see photo on PBO website (M Cade).  A Rosy Rustic trapped at Merley was rather early (D & M Godfrey).  A belated report of a Death's Head Hawkmoth at Tolpuddle (per Dorset B C website).

By day, the empty golden coloured chrysalises cases of Six-spot Burnet Moth numerous among the long grass at Durlston (per Durlston C P website).  At Corfe Hills School at Corfe Mullen, a Hummingbird Hawkmoth (P Benham). 

A lone Dark Sword-grass was the only immigrant amongst a pitiful overnight catch of moths at Portland (M Cade).  A Synaphe punctalis seen while taking a late night stroll in Verwood, while the trap pulled in White-point, Cabbage, Smoky Wainscot, Dunbar and Four-dotted Footman as new for the year (C Court).

In very wet conditions overnight, the only immigrants at Portland were a Delicate and a Silver Y, with a Clay the first for the year there, among the usual resident species (M Cade).   Highlights at Broadwey, were a male Ghost Moth, Sandy Carpet and Bordered Beauty (P Harris).  At Merley, there was a Bordered Beauty, along with Phoenix, Lesser Swallow Prominent, Poplar Grey and two Scalloped Oak (D & M Godfrey).  A group from the Suffolk Moth Group visiting Black Ven, Charmouth: highlights included Dolicharthria punctalis, Ebulea crocealis, Phtheochroa inopiana, about six Morris’s Wainscot, Smoky Wainscot, Fen Wainscot and Clay (M Deans, P Bryant and L Gregory).

Just singles of Diamond-back Moth, Rush Veneer, Dark Sword-grass, Delicate and Silver Y at Portland, with Dot moth the only addition for the year list (M Cade).  A Broad-barred White at Broadwey (P Harris).  A Clancy's Rustic and a Four-spotted Footman at Hurn (M Jeffes).  Among a good haul of moths at Toluddle were a Delicate, two Dot Moth and the first Clay for the year there (J Francis).  At Kingston, the highlights of a modest catch were singles of Lilac Beauty and Sandy Carpet, and the only evidence of immigration was a solitary Udea ferrugalis (P Benham).

The only immigrants at Portland were three Silver Y, and singles of Diamond-back Moth, Rush Veneer, and Rusty-dot Pearl (M Cade). Pyrales the highlights again at Broadwey: Palpita vitrealis and a large Dioryctria abietella; best of the rest were a Kent Black Arches, two Cream-bordered Green Pea and a Freyer's Pug (P Harris).  New for the garden in Dorchester was the plume Amblyptilia punctidactyla (J Down).

At Portland, a poor night for immigrant moths with nothing more than two Diamond-back Moth and singles of Zeiraphera isertana, Rush Veneer and Pearly Underwing (M Cade).  A pristine Bordered Straw at Broadwey (P Harris).  A Striped Hawkmoth at Puddletown (H Wood Homer per P Harris).

By day at Alner's Gorse, two Silver Y, three Five-spot Burnet and a Yellow Shell (per Dorset B C website).  At Portland, immigrants dwindled to just three Diamond-back Moth, two each of Silver Y and Rusty-dot Pearl and a single Delicate (M Cade).   Singles of Delicate, White-point and Silver Y were the only migrants at Chickerell; a Small Elephant Hawkmoth was only the second garden record and singles of Lime Hawkmoth and Shark were new for the garden (C Pinder).  At Broadwey, Pempelia genistella, Perinephela lancealis, Bee Moth and Corn-borer (P Harris).  Highlights at Upton Heath were singles each of Festoon, Bird's Wing, Lobster Moth and Lime Hawkmoth (S Davis).  Highlights at Kingston were a fresh Green Arches new for the garden, Lilac Beauty, Peach Blossom and the first Minor Shoulder-knot of the year (P Benham).

At Portland, 13 Diamond-back Moth, 13 Silver Y and singles of Rusty-dot Pearl, Delicate and Dark Spectacle; singles of Zeiraphera isertana at both the Obs and Southwell (M Cade).  The only moths of note at Chickerell were singles of Delicate and a White-point (C Pinder).  At Broadwey was Perinephela lancealis, Bordered Sallow and three Beautiful Hook-tip (P Harris).  Nearby at Wyke Regis, were White Satin, Blue-bordered Carpet and Scarce Footman; also Bordered Straw which judging by colour and condition was a primary migrant (D Foot).  Dingy Shears was new for the garden at Dorchester, while Drinker and female Ghost were of note (J Down).  Some migrants at Shapwick: Ostrinia nubilalis, Marbled Coronet, two Delicate and two Silver Y; the Marbled Coronet is not a resident of Dorset (P Davey).

By day, Mother Shipton and Five-spot Burnet moths at Sydling St Nicholas and a Scarlet Tiger moth at Hartland Moor (per Dorset B C website).  Also, Chimney Sweeper locally abundant zipping about in brackened edges of willow scrub on Corfe Common (D & M Godfrey). 

At Portland, seven Diamond-back Moth, three Silver Y, two Rusty-dot Pearl, and singles of Rush Veneer and Delicate (M Cade).

At Portland, 19 Diamond-back Moth, five Rusty-dot Pearl, three Silver Y and singles of Rush Veneer, Delicate and Dark Spectacle (M Cade).  The highlights at Broadwey were a Dark Spectacle, two Delicate and a Blackneck (P Harris).  Nearby at Preston, a Palpita vitrealis (R Lambert).  The best of the catch at Merley was a Cream-bordered Green Pea, which was good to see in comparison with Green Oak Tortrix (D & M Godfrey).  At Lytchett Matravers, a Striped Hawkmoth, two each of Poplar Hawkmoth and Elephant Hawkmoth, and a single Privet Hawkmoth among 45 species trapped (G Freeman).  Highlights from Chase Woods: four Rosy Marbled and four Microthrix similella - both species have evidently moved in over the past ten years as there was no sign of either of them when the woods were researched in the mid 90's;  in addition, Great Oak Beauty, three Red-necked Footman, White-point, Ostrinia nubilalis, Olindia schumacherana, 30 Ethmia dodocea, Endothenia quadrimalculana, five Brindled White-spot, 14 Blotched Emerald, a Valerian Pug, three Festoon, a Leopard, six Miller and a Pale Oak Beauty (P Davey).

The only immigrants at Portland were ten Diamond-back Moth, two Silver Y, and singles each of Rush Veneer, Rusty-dot Pearl and a Delicate (M Cade).  Not a lot in the trap at Chickerell, however, L-album Wainscot was of note, Small Fan-foot was new for the garden and Waved Umber a year tick (C Pinder).  At Durlston, Elephant Hawkmoth and Privet Hawkmoth (per Durlston CP website).  54 species at Merley, Wimborne, the best being Scarce Silver-lines, Festoon, Lilac Beauty and Brussels Lace (D & M Godfrey).  The highlights at Walditch were Currant Clearwing and Argolamprotes micella (M Parsons).

Despite at times torrential rain, migrants at Portland included a single Striped Hawkmoth, 29 Diamond-back Moth, 16 Silver Y, three Rush Veneer, two Dioryctria abietella and two Cream-bordered Green Pea (M Cade).  At Chickerell, numbers well down, although Gold Spot was new for the garden, Kent Black Arches a first for the year, and a White-point was of note (C Pinder).   A Blackneck and Perinephela lancealis at Broadwey, (P Harris).  Nearby at Preston, new moth for the garden was a Flame Carpet (R Lambert).  At Shapwick to light, an Ethmia dodecea, Brown Scallop, Kent Black Arches and Scarlet Tiger (unusual for here); also a Morophaga choragella, Epinotia demarniana, Hedya Salicella, Cream-bordered Green Pea, Brindled White-spot, Red-necked Footman, Blotched Emerald, Grey Arches, Leopard and Purple Clay at Whitesheet (P Davey).

By day, in the rain, two small larvae of Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth at Hog Hill (M Parsons).

At Portland, migrant activity included 55 Diamond-back Moth, 16 Silver Y, four Rush Veneer, two Pearly Underwing and singles of Rusty-dot Pearl, Dioryctria abietella, Dark Sword-grass and Delicate; Brown-line Bright-eye was new for the year there (M Cade).  An Orange Footman was the pick of the bunch at Shaggs (M Parsons).  Highlights at Walditch were singles each of Nephopterix angustella, Orange Footman, Delicate, White-point and L-album Wainscot (M Parsons).

A slight improvement at Portland, with 52 Diamond-back Moth, five Delicate, three Cream-bordered Green Pea, four Rusty-dot Pearl, two each of Rush Veneer and Silver Y, a single Dioryctria abietella and the first records of the year of Small Yellow Wave and Muslin Footman (M Cade).  At Chickerell, Privet Hawkmoth and L-album Wainscot were both new for the year (C Pinder).  At Broadwey, the highlights were Leopard Moth, Pinion-streaked Snout, Lilac Beauty, Cypress Carpet and Delicate (P Harris).  A quieter night of late at Kingston, with six Riband Wave new for the year, with further records of two Treble Brown-spot, a Blotched Emerald, with possible migrants of two Delicate and the first Rusty-dot Pearl of the year (P Benham).

Several Mullein Moth caterpillars feeding on Delphiniums in a public garden in Shaftesbury, there being no Mullein plants available (G Hopkins). 

Still fairly quiet at Portland, with nothing more than 12 Silver Y, eight Diamond-back Moth, a Dark Sword-grass and a Delicate; Lackey was the only year tick (M Cade).  At Chickerell, Beautiful Hook-tip was a welcome addition to the garden list, Ghost moth was a year tick and a single White-point was of note (C Pinder).  At Broadwey, Corn-borer, two Delicate and Dark Sword-grass (P Harris).  In Wareham Forest, Rosy Marbled, eight Peach Blossom, three Little Emerald and three Red-necked Footman (P Davey).  Beautiful Snout was new for the garden, a Blotched Emerald was the third for the year, and two Lobster Moth were of note at Merley, Wimborne (D Godfrey).  At Verwood new for the year included Anania verbascalis, Elegia similella, Blackneck, Treble-brown Spot and Blackneck (C Court).

By day Scarlet Tiger was on the wing for the first time at Radipole (A Taylor), and at Durlston, Cinnabar, Six-spot Burnet, Silver Y, Yellow Shell and Burnet Companion all noted (per Durlston C P website).  At Melbury Down, Five-spot Burnet ssp. palustrella and Forester both abundant and a fortnight early, plus two Wood Tiger; at Pamphill, five Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet, within damp/wet neutral grassland site hosted by meadow vetchling (P Davey).

Overnight, eleven Diamond-back Moth and three Delicate were the only migrants attracted to the Obs garden moth-traps (M Cade).  At Chickerell, singles of Orange Footman and Cream-spot Tiger are worth a mention and singles of Lackey, Scalloped Oak and Eyed Hawkmoth, were all year ticks (C Pinder).  At Broadwey, 64 sp of macro, highlights were Delicate, Dark Spectacle, Small Yellow Wave, Double Square-spot and a Bee Moth (P Harris).  Highlights at Walditch were singles each of Delicate, White-point and Orange Footman (M Parsons).  At Kingston, 106 species: including two each of Tawny-barred Angle, Treble Brown-spot and Little Emerald, and singles of Blotched Emerald, Shaded Pug and Alder; among 29 species of micro were two Homoeosoma sinuella and singles of Nephopterix angustella and Ethmia dodecea (P Benham).   At Gillingham, two Dipleurina lacustrata, singles of Archips podana and Plutella xylostella, Figure of Eighty, Small Yellow Wave, Common White Wave, Shark and Plain Golden Y (G Hopkins).

A good day on Fontmell Down, with lots of Five-spot Burnet ssp. palustrella, five Burnet Companion and a Wood Tiger (S Davis). 

Lots of moths in the Portland Obs garden traps again, with immigrants/wanderers that included 16 Diamond-back Moth, two Rusty-dot Pearl, two Silver Y, a Delicate and Cream-bordered Green Pea together with Dwarf Cream Wave, Small Blood-vein, Magpie, Barred Straw, Clouded Silver and Sycamore all new for the year (M Cade).  At Broadwey, two each of Cream-spot Tiger, Coronet, Scorched Wing and Brussels Lace, with singles of Cream-bordered Green Pea, Green Arches, Tawny-barred Angle and Orange Footman; several White-point caught on a daily basis, doubtfully migrants (P Harris).  Small Elephant and Privet Hawkmoths reported from Durlston (per Durlston CP website).  New for the garden at Verwood were Lackey, Common Wainscot, Beautiful Hook-tip, Broom Moth and Grass Wave; notables included Red-necked Footman, Festoon and Rosy Marbled (M Weaver and C Court).  Highlights at Winterborne Stickland were Brussels Lace, Lilac Beauty, Treble Brown-spot, Grey Dagger, Beautiful Hook-tip, Lobster, White-point and Scorched Carpet (per Dorset BC website).  At Piddles Wood, about 130 species (but very few noctuids), including Great Oak Beauty, Microthrix similella, Olindia schumacherana, Incurvaria oehlmanniella, Brindled White-spot, Lead-coloured Pug and Cream-spot Tiger; the first two species are excellent new records for this fine old woodland site (P Davey and C Manley).  At Shapwick, a Rosy Marbled and Phlyctaenia perlucidalis, in addition to three first brood White-point which may point to further inland colonisation of the surrounding grassland by this previously maritime and historically migrant species (P Davey).

Day-flying moths at Durlston included Yellow Shell, Grass Rivulet, Mother Shipton and a few Six-spot Burnet (per Durlston CP website), and Cinnabar and Wood Tiger moths at Lankham Bottom (per Dorset BC website).

Overnight at Portland, 35 Diamond-back Moth, three Rusty-dot Pearl, two Delicate, and single Silver Y and Small China-mark; Common Emerald, Least Carpet, Short-cloaked Moth and Kent Black Arches were all new for the year (M Cade).  Nearby at Broadwey, another Obscure Wainscot, Dioryctria abietella, Dark Spectacle, Green Silver-lines, three Cream-bordered Green Pea, Scorched Wing, Brown Rustic, Grey Pug and Barred Yellow (P Harris).  At Chickerell, a Treble Brown Spot was new for the garden, while a White-point was of note (C Pinder).  A Great Oak Beauty was a first for the Trigon estate (C Manley).  Beautiful China-mark, Blotched Emerald, three Eyed Hawkmoth, two White-point, singles of Delicate, Cypress Carpet, and Pinion-streaked Snout at Shapwick.  At St Catherine’s Hill near Christchurch, Dioryctria abietella, Festoon, Grass Wave, Cypress Carpet, Poplar Kitten and Red-necked Footman were of note (R Harley).  At Wyke Farm, with lights beneath an aspen grove yielded five Apotomis turbidana, female Poplar Hawkmoth, seven Figure of Eighty, five Poplar Grey and a Poplar Kitten; other moths of interest included Alder, Blotched Emerald, Devon Carpet, three Mocha, Red-necked Footman, Nephopterix angustella and three Cryptoblabes bistriga (P Davey).  At Winterborne Stickland, Blotched Emerald, Blood-vein, Green Pug, Privet Hawkmoth, Lime Hawkmoth, Elephant and Small Elephant Hawkmoth, Figure of Eighty, Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Lychnis and Beautiful Golden Y (per Dorset BC website).  Busiest night of the year at Kingston with 300 moths of 79 species: the highlight was an Albonia geofrella, also of note were three Figure of Eighty, two Orange Footman, and singles of Red-necked Footman, Barred Straw, Lime Hawkmoth, Sycamore, Miller and Figure of Eight, while on the migrant front were a Diamond-back Moth and a Delicate (P Benham).

Better than of late at Portland:13 Diamond-back Moth, six Delicate, four Dioryctria abietella, two Rusty-dot Pearl, two Silver Y, a Lozotaeeniodes formosanus and a Marbled White Spot by way of immigrants/wanderers (M Cade); elsewhere on the island, three Portland Ribbon Wave, three Four-spotted, a Ruddy Carpet and two Cyanaeda dentalis (R Hilton and P Clarke).  Highlights at Broadwey were a Phycitodes maritima (conf by P Sterling), and Obscure Wainscot, firsts for the garden, also a Beautiful Hook-tip was of note (P Harris).  Two White-point and a first for the year Lychnis at Chickerell (C Pinder).  At Coldharbour, an Evergestis limbata is the second record for the site in two years, with a record from Trigon in recent years suggests colonisation of crucifers (possibly hedge garlic) in the area by this relative newcomer to the UK. (B Withers per P Davey).  Best night of the year so far at Dorchester, with Grey Arches a first for the garden in 10 years trapping; also Dioryctria abietella (the large form), Ingrailed Clay, Brussels Lace, Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Light Arches, Clouded Silver, Small Elephant Hawkmoth and Mullein among 39 species of macro (J Down).  At Durlston, a Privet Hawkmoth, Small Elephant Hawkmoth, Angle Shades, Dark Arches and Cypress Carpet (per Durlston CP website).  New for the garden at Verwood were Garden Carpet, Green Oak Tortrix, Clouded Silver, Rosy Marbled, Foxglove Pug, Green Pug, Netted Pug, Scorched Carpet, Small Blood-vein and Figure of Eighty, and notable records of Buttoned Snout and Scarce Merveille du Jour (M Weaver and C Court).  Plenty of moths at Ferndown, the highlights were a Blackneck, Eyed Hawkmoth, two Blotched Emerald and a Festoon (D Couzens).  At Shapwick a Dioryctria abietella (P Davey).  Freyer's Pug and two Silver Y at Gillingham, with Pine Hawkmoth a first for the garden, and a long way from extensive areas of pine (G Hopkins).

Of interest at Portland were five Delicate and a Diamond-back Moth by way of migrants, and year-ticks were Riband Wave, Light Arches, Brown Rustic and Small Fan-foot (M Cade).  At Chickerell were singles of Peppered Moth, Ingrailed Clay and two Heart and Club which were all year ticks, while a Delicate, Turnip moth and four Elephant Hawkmoth were of note (C Pinder).  A Small Clouded Brindle at Gillingham (G Hopkins).

The only migrants at Portland were five Diamond-back Moth, three Silver Y, a Rusty-dot Pearl and a Delicate, while Yellow-barred Brindle and Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing were new for the year there (M Cade).  Nearby at Broadwey, Nephopterix angustella and Small Seraphim were the highlights (P Harris).  Two Reed Leopard, a Festoon and a Grass Wave at Morden (P Davey).  At Kingston, 69 species, the most notable were singles each of Homoeosoma sinuella, Common Lutestring, Peach Blossom and Dusky Brocade (P Benham).  At Gillingham, Diamond-back Moth and Wormwood Pug (G Hopkins).

By day, a single Adela croesella on Michaelmas Daisy at BC HQ near Wareham, and overnight highlight at Walditch was an Orange Footman (M Parsons).  Portland traps were busy, with the best being a Green Oak Tortrix at Fortuneswell (E Cockburn), and seven Diamond-back Moth, four Delicate, two each of Rusty-dot Pearl and Pearly Underwing, and the first Crescent Dart of the year at the Obs (M Cade).  At Chickerell, another good night, with Lozotaenioides formosanus, Bee Moth, Riband Wave, Yellow Shell, two Clouded Silver and two Elephant Hawkmoth all year ticks, as was the only migrant, a Delicate (C Pinder).  Treble Brown Spot, Scorched Wing, and Orange Footman were the highlights at Broadstone (K Clements).  New for the year at Verwood included Evergestis pallidata, Green Oak Tortrix, Peach Blossom, Swallow-tailed Moth, Small Blood-vein, Common Carpet, Poplar Hawkmoth, Eyed Hawkmoth, Red-necked Footman, Lobster Moth, Figure of Eighty, Dark Arches and Sycamore (C Court).  A Foxglove Pug, Gillingham (G Hopkins).

By day at Portland, a couple of freshly emerged Drinker and Glyphipterix simpliciella, also some Brown-tail and Lackey caterpillars (K Thomas).  Overnight there, the only migrants were single Delicate and Silver Y, while Figure of Eighty, Campion and Bordered Sallow were all firsts for the year there (M Cade).  Nearby at Broadwey, Cryptoblabes bistrigia was a notable pyrale for the garden (P Harris).  At Chickerell, the best night of the year so far, in terms of variety, produced 12 garden year ticks: Garden Pebble, Small Magpie, Mullein Wave, Small Seraphim, Magpie, two Brussels Lace, Puss Moth, two Flame, Smoky Wainscot, Middle-barred Minor, Common /  Lesser Common Rustic and Snout; also of local interest, singles of Yellow-barred Brindle and Cream-spot Tiger (C Pinder).  A female Grass Wave at Trigon (C Manley).  At Whitesheet, several interesting species: five Epinotia demarniana, a Plutella xylostella, Rosy Marbled, six Pale Oak Beauty; while at Shapwick, a Delicate (P Davey).

At Portland, few arrivals overnight, with three Delicate, two each of Rusty-dot Pearl and Silver Y, and singles of Diamond-back Moth and Pearly Underwing (M Cade).  Best night of the year so far at Broadwey, with 54 macros - of note were two Orange Footman, Foxglove Pug, three Freyer's Pug, two Brown Rustic, two White-point, Puss Moth and Middle-barred Minor (P Harris).  New for the garden at Verwood were Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Beautiful Brocade and Brown Rustic.  A total of 17 newly emerged Broad-bordered Bee Hawkmoth, raised from eggs laid last summer in the garden, have now been released  (M Weaver).  At Row Hill Coppice, no Map-winged Swift at last years best site, perhaps a little early, or there has been considerable conifer clearance affecting the bracken on site; however, at least 50 species, including Diamond-back Moth, a Marbled Brown and three Orange Footman.  Nearby at Batcombe Wood, Gore Hill, a Puss Moth, two Lobster Moth, Scorched Wing and a Green Silver lines (T A Box).   At Gillingham, five Apotomis betuletana (G Hopkins). 

A total of 84 species identified at the DMG field meeting at Alner’s Gorse.  Local and rare species noted included: a Five-spot Burnet, Blotched Emerald, eight Small Seraphim, eight Sharp-angled Peacock, five Scorched Wing, four Brussels Lace, seven Grass Wave, four Marbled Brown, three Orange Footman, three Cream-spot Tiger, and a White-point.  Three larval webs of Small Eggar on blackthorn, and a Blossom Underwing larva, confirms breeding of these species.  With the new additions to the site list, this brings the total up to 428 species (P Butter).

At Portland, year-ticks were Peach Blossom at Fortuneswell (E Cockburn), and Smoky Wainscot at the Bill, and migrants were singles of Diamond-back Moth, Delicate and Silver Y (M Cade).  At Hardy's Monument, Blackdown, no Belles to try and sort out this year, but Cream-spot Tiger was new for the site, and checking the traps while listening to Dartford Warblers singing in the fog was good value! (T A Box).  New for the year at Verwood were Buff Ermine, Small Magpie, Garden Grass Veneer, Marbled Brown, Campion, Buff-tip, Swallow Prominent and Light Brocade - also of note were Orange Footman and Pale Oak Beauty (C Court). 31 May 2007

Despite promising conditions, few moths of note at Portland: Drinker and Common Footman on the wing for the first time this year, and three Diamond-back Moth and two Silver Y were the only migrants (M Cade).  At Verwood, another Scarce Merveille de Jour, and new for the garden were Spruce Carpet, Blotched Emerald, Brussels Lace and Cream Wave (M Weaver).

At Portland, only the fifth island record of Scallop Shell was the only moth of interest (M Cade).  Of interest in an otherwise modest catch at Chickerell, were singles of Orange Footman, Pearly Underwing and White-point (C Pinder).  New for the year at Gillingham were Clouded Brindle, Ingrailed Clay and Shoulder-striped Wainscot (G Hopkins).

At Broadwey, plenty of moths but most were Heart and Dart and Vine's Rustic, but the best of the rest were two Elephant Hawkmoth, a Privet Hawkmoth and a Mullein (P Harris).  A cold night, but of nine species caught in an hour at Verwood, included Yellow Shell, Lime Hawkmoth and Purple Bar as all new for the year (C Court).

Despite miserable conditions at Portland overnight, a fair catch of moths, including three Rusty-dot Pearl, a Diamond-back Moth and the first of two Delicate of the year provided migrant interest, and the first Lime Hawkmoth of the year (M Cade).

By day, Broad-bordered Bee Hawkmoth nectaring on Rhododendron at Oaker's Wood, and at Melbury Down, Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth resting on Common Milkwort, Cinnabar, Burnet Companion and Small Purple-barred (P Clarke).  Three larval nests of Small Eggar on roadside blackthorn, south and south east of Caundle Marsh (K Thomas).

At Broadwey, of note were Freyer's Pug, Brown Silver-line and Shears (P Harris).  At Chickerell, Cream-spot Tiger was an addition to the year list, amongst a catch dominated by Heart and Dart and Vine's Rustic (C Pinder).  New for the garden at Gillingham was Cyclamen Tortrix, and Gordon adds that " as an indicator on how early everything is, by this time last year (which was a bumper year) my total for the garden was 59 species.  This year it is 101!" (G Hopkins).

At Portland, quiter than of late, with three Diamond-back Moth and a Rusty-dot Pearl, while new for the year were Brown Silver-line, Brussels Lace, Straw Dot and Snout (M Cade).  At Broadwey, the highlights were Cream-bordered Green Pea, Scorched Wing, Orange Footman, Small Angle Shades and the combusta form of Clouded-bordered Brindle, the latter a first for the garden (P Harris).  At Shaggs, 62 species in total, taking the site total to just over 200 species since last November: a Diamond-back Moth, Thistle Ermine, Maiden's Blush, Sharp-angled Peacock, nine Scorched Wing, five Orange Footman, single Least Black Arches and Light Brocade, two each of Vine's Rustic and Pinion-streaked Snout (L Hill).  At Verwood, of note were Orange Footman, Pale Oak Beauty, Small Seraphim and Scarce Merveille de Jour, and Lime-speck Pug and Diamond-back Moth (M Weaver).  New for the year at Gillingham were Udea olivalis, Cream-spot Tiger, Small Angle Shades, Burnished Brass and Silver Y (G Hopkins).

Daytime records from the north of the county: at Ashmore Forest, 18 Drab Looper netted along the track, also Nemophora degeerella; at Melbury Down, at least four Burnet Companion; Small Eggar larvae in blackthorn, and a Clouded Silver (K Thomas).

At Portland, immigrant interest was provided by six Diamond-back Moth, three Rusty-dot Pearl, two Pearly Underwing and a Silver Y (M Cade).  42 species overnight at Shaggs, including a Mullein Wave, Treble Brown Spot, Small Seraphim, Scorched Wing, Brussels Lace, three Orange Footman, two Light Brocade, and a Vine's Rustic (L Hill).  At Creekmoor, 55 moths of 23 species, including Scorched Wing, which was new for the garden, also Lime-speck Pug, a Lobster, and four Treble-lines (S Davis).  At Verwood, 27 species, including Orange Footman, Maiden's Blush and Least Black Arches (C Court).  Firsts for the year at Gillingham were Elephant Hawkmoth, Pale Mottled Willow, Straw Dot and Sharp-angled Peacock (G Hopkins).

The highlight was the confirmation by Peter Davey of a very fresh Blair's Mocha, caught on the night of 17 May at Wimborne, which is probably the earliest record of this rare migrant (J Fradgley).  By day, Mother Shipton at Hod Hill (per Dorset B C website).

In Verwood, the first of 20 Broad-bordered Bee Hawkmoth pupae kept over winter in an unheated garage hatched; the eggs were laid during June 2006 on honeysuckle growing in the garden (M Weaver).  Overnight, at Portland, Peppered Moth and Dark Arches were new for the year, and a Diamond-back Moth was the only migrant (M Cade).  Also new for the year, at Chickerell, were White Ermine, Turnip Moth and Marbled Minor agg. By day, at least four nests of Small Eggar seen in the Cogden Beach area, along with two nests of Lackey, and many Brown-tail caterpillars, particularly along the roadside, wandering away from their nests; a singles Magpie caterpillar was also seen (M Parsons).  In addition several Lackey caterpillars seen at Durlston, while the Brown-tail caterpillars have stripped some of the Blackthorn there (per Durlston CP website).  A Least Black Arches to a security light, Verwood, was new to the garden (M Weaver).

A Mocha at Portland was a quality wanderer (M Cade).  14 species at Chickerell, with Pale Prominent, Sallow Kitten and Small Square-spot, all new for the year there (C Pinder).  23 species at Canford Heath, with notable records of singles Birch Mocha, Maiden's Blush and Cypress Carpet (T Elborn).  26 species to MV over a sheet at Verwood: Marbled Brown, Great Prominent and Orange Footman were all new for the garden, while Scarce Prominent and Maiden's Blush were of note (M Weaver).

At Durlston, a nursery web of the Lackey on a hawthorn, the caterpillar with a blue stripe down their backs, very different to the thousands of Brown-tail Moth on the coastal path, which has two brown spots, and the hairs can give a very irritating rash if touched (per Durlston CP website). 

A single Pearly Underwing at Portland (M Cade).  Singles each of Broken-barred Carpet and Coronet at Shaggs were new for the year there (L Hill).  Some good records from Trigon, including Eucosmomorpha albersana and Ringed Carpet (C Manley).  A Large Yellow Underwing and a the first Buff-tip of the year there were of note at Wareham (R Evans).

By day at Langdown Farm, Mother Shipton and Common Carpet (J Down).  Other daytime records: single Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth at Coombe Bottom, along with Pyrausta nigrata and Pyrausta aurata; a number of Speckled Yellow and Small yellow Underwing and the plume Adaina microdactyla at Chetterwood; up to ten Small yellow Underwing in a field containing the foodplant Common Mouse-ear at Shapwick (P Davey).

Overnight, at Portland, three Silver Y, two each of Rusty-dot Pearl and Pearly Underwing, and singles of Diamond-back Moth and Gem; Pale Tussock, Buff-tip, Least Black Arches and Vine's Rustic were all year-ticks there (M Cade).  Also on Portland, Cypress Carpet and a very early L-album Wainscot (E Cockburn).  New species at Shaggs were two Silver-ground Carpet, a Clouded Border, Little Thorn, Scorched Wing, two Brindled Beauty, a Chocolate-tip and two Cinnabar, while other notables included Birch Mocha, two Maiden's Blush and a Great Prominent (L Hill).  A late but very fresh Small Eggar at Shapwick, also a Buttoned Snout skulking 10 metres away from the MV light (P Davey).  Highlights at Gillingham included Pale Tussock, Pale Prominent, Streamer, Buff-tip, Spectacle, Iron Prominent, Chocolate-tip, Light-feathered Rustic, Light Brocade and a Plusia sp awaiting confirmation (G Hopkins).

Another Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth at Cowdown Hill and two more at Folly Hill (M Parsons).  At Portland by day, the discovery of a Jersey Tiger caterpillar in the Obs garden provided final proof that this species is now breeding on the island.  Also of interest the first Four-spotted of the year was seen this morning at a regular site for this species near the privet hedge at the Bill.  Overnight there, the only migrant was a Rusty-dot Pearl, and Common Wainscot, L-album Wainscot and Light Brocade were firsts for the year there (M Cade).  At Chickerell, a Chamomile Shark was a first for the garden, while Bright-line Brown-eye, Treble-lines and Pale Tussock were all first for the year there (C Pinder).  A Light Brocade and a Dark Sword-grass at Tolpuddle (J Francis).  At Kingston, 30 species, highlight was a pristine Marbled Pug, which probably drifted the few hundred yards from Deadmoor Common, Epinotia tetrquetrana and Oak-tree Pug were new for the garden, and other notables include Green Carpet, Silver-ground Carpet, Garden Carpet, Pale Tussock, Common Marbled Carpet, Ruby Tiger, Knot-grass, and Currant Pug (P Benham).

By day, two Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth at Hod Hill, but no luck at one of the regular sites on Giant Hill;  also of note were c.50 larvae of Wood Tiger at the BC reserve of Lankham Bottom, and one larva at Giant Hill (M Parsons). 

It was much too windy to expect anything in numbers in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps, although two Diamond-back Moth and a Silver Y provided some minor immigrant interest (M Cade).  At Holt Heath: Diamond-back Moth, three Ancylis apicella, Cydia strobilella (another new micro for Dorset, with two further records at Puddletown suggesting all three were immigrants), three Emperor, 16 Dingy Mocha, two Ruddy Highflyer, five Ringed Carpet, Pale Oak Beauty, six Grey Birch, Eyed Hawkmoth, Lime Hawkmoth, seven Scarce Prominent and four Chocolate-tip (C Manley, S Hatch, D Paull and P Davey).  A Dingy Mocha at Wareham was a first for the garden there (R Adams).  Two hours with a lamp and sheet at Verwood late evening, produced 24 species, including Scarce Prominent, Birch Mocha, Oak Nycteoline and Turnip Moth (C Court).  Another Pinion-spotted Pug at Shapwick (P Davey).

The only immigrants in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps this morning were four Silver Y and three Dark Sword-grass; a single Maiden's Blush was a wanderer of interest whilst Heart and Dart was on the wing for the first time (M Cade).  At Cheddington Wood: Argyresthia glabratella (confirmed as a first for Dorset), while other highlights include three Mocha and four Barred Umber (P Butter and P Davey).

Two Silver Y provided the only immigrants interest in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps this morning, Common Swift and V-Pug were also recorded for the first time this year.  New for the year at Shaggs included Green Carpet, Sharp-angled Peacock, White-pinion Spotted and Poplar Hawkmoth, while Barred Hook-tip, Frosted Green, two Great Prominent and a Least Black Arches were also of note (L Hill). A long awaited goodie from Shapwick, a Pinion-spotted Pug (P Davey).  An early Rivulet at Kingston, and other firsts for the year there included Grey Pine Carpet, Marbled Brown, Pale Mottled Willow, and other records of interest were Early Tooth-striped and Scorched Carpet (P Benham).

At Portland, moths numbers picked up in the muggier conditions, however, the only migrants were three Pearly Underwing, two Rusty-dot Pearl and two Silver Y (M Cade).  At Broadwey: two Oak-tree Pug, a Lychnis, Common Wave, and a rather early Tawny Marbled Minor were new for the year, while single Silver Y and Turnip moth were migrants (P Harris).  An early Willow Beauty at Chickerell (C Pinder).  A Pearly Underwing, Grey Birch, three Maiden’s Blush, two Narrow-winged Pug, a Marbled Brown and a Frosted Green were the highlights at Ferndown (D Couzens).  28 species at Verwood, notable were Pine Hawkmoth, Lunar Marbled Brown, Orange Footman and Ringed Carpet (C Court).  At Shaggs, a Pale Tussock and two Knot-grass were new for the year, while Maiden's Blush, three Great Prominent and a Least Black Arches were of note (L Hill).  At Motcombe: Clouded Border, Swallow and Lesser Swallow Prominent, Sallow Kitten and Pebble Hook-tip (per Dorset B C website).

A 'longhorn' moth Adela reaumurella  on the wing by day, Lytchett Matravers (G Freeman).  Four Pearly Underwing were the only migrant species from the Obs traps on Portland (M Cade).  A Turnip Moth the only minor highlight at Broadwey (P Harris).  Treble-bar and Spectacle, new for the year at Shaggs (L Hill).

A Clouded Border and two Muslin Moth at Chickerell, and probably the same Rusty-dot Pearl as previous day (C Pinder).  A Pine Hawkmoth was the highlight at Lytchett Matravers (G Freeman).  At Verwood, two Engrailed, an Iron Prominent, a Purple Thorn, Birch Mocha, and three male Pale Tussock drawn to caged female (M Weaver).  At Kingston, a nice variety in the trap included Great, three Swallow, Coxcomb and four Pebble Prominents, all except Swallow being new for the year; other firsts for the year were Chocolate-tip, Angle shades and a Tawny Pinion; another Mullein and a Grey Shoulder-knot were also of note, as was a high count for the garden of five Frosted Green (P Benham).

A slight increase in immigrant numbers saw totals of ten Pearly Underwing and four Silver Y caught in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps overnight; Mullein and Treble Lines were both new for the year there (M Cade).  A Rusty-dot Pearl was new for the year at Chickerell (C Pinder).  15 moths at Creekmoor, including Buff-tip and White Ermine (S Davis).  A Scarce Prominent and Birch Mocha among 16 species to MV, Verwood (M Weaver).

A Common Pug found by day at the Butterfly Conservation HQ near Wareham (L Hill).  Early Grey and Maiden's Blush to security light, Verwood (M Weaver).  Overnight, immigrant interest in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps was provided by four more Pearly Underwing whilst Purple Bar and Lychnis were both first records for the year (M Cade).  A Mullein and Pine Beauty new for the year at Kingston (P Benham).

Overnight mothing at the Portland Obs produced three Pearly Underwings and a single Diamond-back Moth along with first records for the year of Waved Umber and Pale, Pebble and Swallow Prominents (M Cade).  A reduced catch at Shaggs, with Scalloped Hazel and Silver Y new for the year, and other notables include Least Black Arches and Tawny Pinion (L Hill).  An Angle Shades was a first of the year at Chickerell (C Pinder).  Pale Tussock and another Northern Drab at Gillingham (G Hopkins).

By day, numerous clumps of thick webs of the Brown-tail Moth, full of caterpillars, which if touched can be a skin irritant (per Durlston C P website), and Pyraustra cespitalis at Southfileds Down and Lankham Bottom near Sydling St Nicholas (per Dorset B C website).  Overnight, immigrants at Portland consisted of six Silver Y and four Pearly Underwing whilst Garden Carpet, Flame Shoulder, Nutmeg and Cabbage were all on the wing for the first time (M Cade)  A Lunar Marbled Brown at Broadwey was of note (P Harris).  At Chickerell, singles each Yellow-barred Brindle, Ruby Tiger, Flame Shoulder and a Chinese Character were all first for the year (C Pinder).  Another good night at Shaggs, 178 moths of 44 species, with Pebble Hook-tip and Birch Mocha new for the year, while other notables included a Maiden's Blush, two White-spotted Pug, Peacock Moth, Great Prominent, two Pale Pinion and an Oak Nycteoline (L Hill).  Singles of Northern Drab, Shuttle-shaped Dart and Spectacle at Gillingham (G Hopkins).

Two Silver Y, a Rusty-dot Pearl and a Pearly Underwing were the only immigrants caught overnight in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps (M Cade).  More evidence of very early occurrences, include a Buff-tip at Broadwey, and Nut-tree Tussock was new for the year there (P Harris).  At Chickerell, singles of Blood-vein, V-Pug, Silver Y and two Shuttle-shaped Dart were all firsts for the year (C Pinder).  Another good night at Shaggs, with ten new species for the garden, and other notables include singles each of Frosted Green, White-spotted Pug, Peacock Moth, Great Prominent, Least Black Arches, Pale Pinion, Dotted Chestnut and Oak Nycteoline (L Hill).  14 species including Grey Dagger, to MV at Verwood (M Weaver).  A Frosted Green at Winterborne Stickland (per Dorset B C website).  A Red Sword-grass and Poplar Kitten at Gillingham (G Hopkins).

By day, Hummingbird Hawkmoth in Poole (per Dorset B C website).  Four Pearly Underwing and the first White-point and Muslin Moth of the year were the best of the overnight captures in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps and an early Bright-line Brown-eye was caught in a garden moth-trap at Reap Lane (M Cade).  A Silver Y among 21 other species at Broadwey (P Harris).  At Chickerell, singles of Nut-tree Tussock and  Heart and Dart are both firsts for the year (the latter is a good month earlier than last year) (C Pinder).  135 of 43 species at Shaggs, highlights include Pine Hawkmoth and Dotted Chestnut (L Hill).  At Boys Wood: Scarce Prominent, Sallow Kitten, two Acleris literana and 11 Lead-coloured Drab were highlights; about 40 species all told with roughly 140 Lunar Marbled Brown and 80 Frosted Green (P Davey).  At Little Minterne Hill, a Diamond-back Moth was the first to the light, but turned out to be the only migrant; otherwise 130 of 27 species, including 11 Lunar Marbled Brown, seven Water Carpet, three Waved Umber and an Iron Prominent, while at Minterne Seat Coppice, 89 of 23 species, including a Small Brindled Beauty, Barred Umber, two Red-green Carpet and a Great Prominent (T A Box).  At Kingston, two Silver Y were the first indications of immigration here this year while amongst the other 28 species Lesser Swallow Prominent was new for the year along with a Muslin Moth; one new site record in the form of Eriocrania subpurperella - of the common species it was interesting to see that Small Quaker numbers halved compared with the previous night, yet Common Quaker doubled (P Benham).

Two Pearly Underwing and a Silver Y was caught in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps overnight and the first Lime-speck Pug of the year was attracted to the lit windows of the Obs lounge (M Cade).  13 species at Wyke Regis: highlights being Muslin Moth, Brindled Pug, three Silver Y and a very early Small Dusty Wave (D Foot).  20 species at Broadwey; year ticks were: Cypress Carpet, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Pale Mottled Willow, Common Marbled Carpet, Pine Beauty, Muslin Moth and Bright-line Brown-eye (P Harris).  142 of 32 species at Shaggs, including ten Early Tooth-striped, and 11 Brindled Pug and two Waved Umber (L Hill).  17 species at Verwood, including Lunar Marbled Brown, Scalloped Hook-tip, Waved Umber and Oak Nycteoline (C Court).  56 species came to two light traps left out overnight on Holt Heath and included Dingy Mocha, Maiden's Blush, Red Sword-grass, Dotted Chestnut, Agonopterix assimilella, Horse Chestnut, Brindled Beauty, Ringed Carpet, Grey Birch, Silver Y, Adela cuprella and Ancylis apicella; at Shapwick, Mullein and Turnip (presumed immigrant) were recorded (P Davey).  27 species at Powerstock, including  Semioscopis steinkellneriana and Satellite (L Hill and M Parsons).  156 moths of 33 species at Kingston, among them 2 garden firsts - singles of Early Tooth-striped and Acleris litteranaNutmeg, Red Chestnut, Mullein, and two Frosted Green were all new for the year; others of note included four Blossom Underwing and, bucking the trend of early emergences, a late Early Moth which appeared to be fairly fresh (P Benham).

A single Silver Y was the only migrant caught at Portland Obs (M Cade).  Waved Umber, Shoulder Stripe, Flame Shoulder and Spectacle all new for the year at Broadwey (P Harris).  At Shaggs, 123 moths of 28 species, including four Scalloped Hook-tip, seven Early Tooth-striped, a Waved Umber, two Pebble Prominent, single Swallow and Pale Prominent, and a Lunar Marbled Brown (L Hill).  A Lesser Swallow Prominent at Winfrith, Wool (per Dorset B C website).   Red Sword-grass, three Blossom Underwing, 26 Frosted Green, Coxcomb Prominent, Pale Prominent, two Great Prominent, Waved Umber, Small Phoenix and Acleris literana at Alners Gorse; very early emergences continue with Lobster and Red Twin-spot Carpet at Shapwick also last night (P Davey).  At Kingston, a good night for the time of year with 110 moths of 26 species, which included a first site record for Northern Drab; others of interest included two more Blossom Underwing, Scorched Carpet, two Lunar Marbled Brown, and an early Bright-line Brown-eye (P Benham).  A Knot-grass at Gillingham (G Hopkins).

At Portland, two Pearly Underwings provided some immigrant interest in the Obs garden moth-traps; the traps also attracted year-ticks in the form of Chamomile Shark and Chinese Character (M Cade).  At Broadwey, Oak Beauty and two Herald, while Dotted Border and Mottled Pug were new for the year (P Harris).  Small Eggar, Northern Drab and Barred Tooth-striped at the latter species known site in north Dorset (P Davey).

Hummingbird Hawkmoths continue to be seen on a daily basis at Portland, with several reports from across the island today (M Cade).  A Twin-spotted Quaker was a first for the garden at Chickerell (C Pinder).  At Broadstone: three Hebrew Character, singles each of Lunar Marbled Brown and Oak Beauty, three Powdered Quaker, an Early Grey - ab rosea (K Clements).  At Verwood, a Frosted Green, eight Pine Beauty, a Common Quaker and a Small Quaker (M Weaver).

By day, over 100 Light Orange Underwing flying around amng aspen groves in Boys Wood (P Davey).  Overnight, singles of Pine Beauty and Oak Nycteoline were noteworthy wanderers attracted to the Portland Obs garden moth-traps (M Cade).   33 moths of ten species at Broadwey: the highlights were Pale Pinion, Herald and two Twin-spotted Quaker (P Harris).  At Chilfrome: nine Common Quaker, two Powdered Quaker, a Chestnut, two Oak Beauty, a Small Quaker, four Hebrew Character, four Clouded Drab, and a Dotted Border (S Philp).  A Small Eggar and a Herald at Shapwick, and a total of 24 moth species from Chedington Wood included a Chocolate-tip and four Frosted Green (P Davey).  The highlight at Gillingham was an Oak Nycteoline (G Hopkins).

The clear cool nights of last few days has obviously suppressed activity, however, Herald and Shuttle-shaped Dart were new for the year in the Portland Obs garden moth-traps (M Cade).  The highlights of the first attempt for some nights at Broadwey were Brindled Beauty, Twin-spotted Quaker and Powdered Quaker (P Harris).

By day, three Light Orange Underwing flying in the lee of, and alighting on aspen canopy in Boys Wood; in addition a large pupa (27mm by 14mm approx) inside a tough cocoon affixed to an aspen trunk about 3 feet off the ground, considered to be a Puss Moth, also in Boys Wood (P Davey).  Overnight, Dotted Chestnut and an early Pebble Prominent trapped at Kilwood, Norden, plus an early Nut-tree Tussock at Shapwick (P Davey).

At Chickerell, another small catch overnight included singles of Double-striped Pug, Small Quaker and the first Clouded Drab of the year there (C Pinder).  At Shaggs, Early Tooth-striped and Dotted Chestnut singles amongst the usual suspects (L Hall).  Two Small Eggar at Shapwick (P davey).  A very early male Muslin Moth, Gillingham (G Hopkins).

Another Hummingbird Hawkmoth was on the wing at the Portland Obs, by day , and the first Turnip Moth of the year there overnight (M Cade).  Another Hummingbird Hawkmoth at Wimborne (per Dorset B C website).  The first two Powdered Quaker of the year there at Broadwey (P Harris).  At Puddletown, seven Small Eggar (H Wood Homer per P Harris).  Despite another cold night, trapping proved worthwhile, with about 80 moths of 12 species coming to light at Kingston; this included Grey Shoulder-knot, Double-striped Pug and Red Sword-grass as firsts for the year and a new site record of Small Eggar - only the second time in 11 years of trapping in the general area.  Another Small Eggar was also a first at Gillingham, also Double Striped Pug, Early Grey, Clouded Drab and six Small Quaker (G Hopkins).

Only one moth on the wing at Lydlinch, by day, Diurnea fagella (G Hopkins).  Overnight at Kingston, despite the cold weather, about 30 moths of 9 species made it to the trap including two Diurnea fagella and the first Powdered Quakers of the year, but the highlight was a fresh Lead-coloured Drab (P Benham).

Singles each of Caloptilia stigmatella, Yellow Horned, March Moth, Spruce Carpet, Brindled Pug, Early Thorn, 18 Small Quaker, two Powdered Quaker, 23 Common Quaker, 13 Clouded Drab, 12 Twin-Spotted Quaker, six Hebrew Character, one Grey Shoulder-knot, seven Early Grey and four Chestnut at Shaggs (L Hill).  The first trapping session at Walditch for nearly a month produced a single Pale Pinion, two Grey Shoulder-knot, a single March Moth, two Double-striped Pug, a Eudonia angustea and a good scattering of Orthosia sp., including Hebrew Character, Twin-spotted Quaker, Small Quaker, Common Quaker and Clouded Drab (M Parsons).

By day, three Hummingbird Hawkmoths at Weston and a single at Southwell, Portland.  Overnight, an Early Tooth-striped was a notable capture in the Obs garden moth-traps (the only previous records are of singles in 1989 and 1990); immigrant interest was provided by singles of Pearly Underwing and Dark Sword-grass, whilst Small Quaker and Clouded Drab were both year-ticks (M Cade).  At Broadwey, 25 moths of 11 usual species, with 12 Common Quaker and three Double-striped Pug (P Harris).  88 moths of 22 species at Shaggs, the highlights being the first migrant Rush Veneer of the year, and an early Spruce Carpet (L Hill).  A Pearly Underwing was a surprise at Chickerell, also a Double-striped Pug and two each of the now regular Hebrew Character and Common Quaker (C Pinder).  At Verwood: a Common Quaker, 22 Pine Beauty, single Early Thorn and Chestnut, seven Yellow Horned, an Early Grey, two Double-striped Pug and an Oak Beauty (M Weaver).  12 species came to light overnight at Kingston, including two Small Brindled Beauties and the first two Shoulder-stripes of the year (P Benham).

Moth numbers are picking up a little at the Portland Obs where year-ticks in recent nights have included Early Thorn, Angle Shades and Common Quaker; a single Dotted Chestnut - only the fourth record for the island - was a more noteworthy capture in the traps overnight (M Cade).  At Chickerell, an Emmelina monodactyla, singles each of Dotted Border, Early Thorn and Hebrew Character, and seven Common Quaker (C Pinder).  At Shaggs, an improvement of late: one Diurnea flagella, two Twenty-plume Moth, a Painted Lady, eight Yellow Horned, a March Moth, three Early Thorn, one Oak Beauty, five Red Chestnut, 18 Small Quaker, 31 Common Quaker, four Clouded Drab, a Twin-spotted Quaker, eight Hebrew Character, two Pale Pinion, two Grey Shoulder-knot, 21 Early Grey, a Satellite, and six Chestnut (L Hill).

At Shaggs: an Ypsolopha ustella indoors, while to light were singles of Acleris notana and Acleris hastiana, two each of Pale Brindled Beauty and Oak Beauty, a Mottled Umber, Early Moth, Hebrew Character and two Chestnut (L Hill).  At Verwood: a Twenty-plume Moth indoors; two Mottled Umber, and single Dotted Border and Double-striped Pug to security light, and a singles Oak Beauty and Mottled Umber to MV (M Weaver).  At Shapwick, Acleris hastiana, Clouded Drab, two Oak Beauty, Satellite, Chestnut, Grey Shoulder-knot, Dotted Border (P Davey).

Overnight moth-trapping at the Portland Bird Observatory produced singles of Pearly Underwing and Silver Y, along with a small selection of resident species that included the first Tawny Pinion and Early Grey of the year (M Cade).  A Hummingbird Hawkmoth for its second day, in a factory at Weymouth (B Spencer per P Harris).  A single Double-striped Pug at Broadwey (P Harris).  At Shaggs: a Red-green Carpet, two Double-striped Pug, two Pale Brindled Beauty, a Spring Usher, three Chestnut and a Bloxworth Snout (L Hill).  At Chilfrome: Spring Usher, Early Moth, Early Thorn, and Dark Chestnut (S Philp).

Shaggs seems to be monopolising all the moths at the moment......an Agonopterix alstromeriana indoors, with the rest to light: Ypslopha ustella, Winter Moth, two Grey Shoulder-knot, two Double-striped Pug, a Pale brindled Beauty, five Chestnut, and a Dark Chestnut (L Hill).  At Kingston, an Agonopterix heracliana and a fresh Hebrew Character (P Benham).
