Late news from the night of the 12th at Durlston, where an
unidentified noctuid has been identified as a Sombre Brocade, found on
the near continent and the Channel Islands, but a first
for mainland Britain. Resembling a very brown Brindled Green,
but slightly bigger, and looking more like a 'Brocade', given the lack of green
plus the pronounced reniform/orbicular stigmata
The Sombre Brocade (Dryobotodes tenebrosa)
falls within the same family group as the Brindled Green (Dryobotodes eremita).
It is on the wing during October, a little later than the Brindled Green and a
little earlier than the Oak Rustic (Dryobota labecula), but all three
potentially overlapping in the first fortnight of October. The larva of
the Sombre Brocade feeds on the same foodplant as the Oak Rustic, namely holm
oak, so evidently there is scope for it to become resident in localities
currently occupied by the Oak Rustic, if it has not already done so
The distribution of these two holm
oak-feeders in Europe overlap and is confined to the Mediterranean region plus
the whole of Iberia
(P Davey).

Of interest, we are just about to celebrate three years of
regular, almost daily updates on the
Dorset Moth Group
website. The site does have
its regular visitors, and is one of two websites regularly acknowledged in the
quarterly moth report in British Wildlife. The best daily average of
different individual visitors to the site was in June 2007, when just under 200
different visitors logged on per day. 2008 in contrast has been rather
quieter, and I suspect that this is due to the paucity of interesting records
reflecting the general malaise experienced by us all when there is not much to
report, and hope that it is not that the site is not of interest and fulfilling
your needs. The site is only of use and successful when information and records
of interest are received and shared, and I thank both the regular and casual
contributors. I would urge everyone to send me details of sightings and
any photographs to help liven up the pages, not forgetting that the records
should still be sent to the relevant Recorder at the end of the year. A
new feature I plan to introduce is trip-lists and details of moth type breaks
both in the UK and abroad, to generate interest, and perhaps stimulate others
into catching a few moths of interest outside the County. Any other
suggestions on what you would like to see would be welcome. This is your
website, and your support is gratefully appreciated.
